Understanding the Invincible Teenager

advice, modeling and how to assess risks. So, communication's got to be open and without ordering or judgment. So that teens are going to listen and learn how to assess risks. Because let's face it, there are risks in everything we do whether it's just getting into a car. When I get into my car to drive to work that's a risk. It's a risk that I assess just the same as if I was getting into a car with a group of teenagers. That would certainly be a different risk assessment for me! What you need to be your teens is that there are a variety of consequences for every risk you take. Some risks are okay because they're not going to generally result in serious injury to your health.

Giving Your Children Roots and Wings

Most of us, however, are somewhere in the middle---we have accepted some of our parents values and rejected others. This is a normal process of development. As parents, though, we really fight that period in our children's lives when they are attempting to differentiate themselves from us. Maybe it is because we fear for their safety in their decision-making. Maybe we can see that they are engaging in unhealthy behavior or heading down a life path that will ultimately lead to unhappiness. Whatever the reason, we get scared if our children's values differ too much from our own. What can we, as parents, do? First of all, as we raise our children, we are helping to strengthen their roots.

Registering Your Child for Kindergarten

While registration is free there are some costs associated with kindergarten registration. Your child will need a current physical (often documented on the state's medical exam form) and will need to be current on all vaccinations. Your child will also need a current eye exam (often documented on a state eye exam form). Most schools also require a birth certificate and social security number. Some schools require these five documents at the time of registration: ~ Birth certificate ~ Social security card ~ Current immunization record (on state certificate) ~ Current physical record (on state medical exam form) ~ Current eye exam (on state eye exam form) Other schools are more flexible and allow registration with only some of the forms as long as all other information is provided by the time school starts.

Improving Your Child's Reading Comprehension

The earlier you begin working on language with your child -- simply speaking to your child, reading to your child, and then listening and responding to your child's communications -- the better off your child will be when the time comes to learn to ready. Studies show a strong connection between early language development and reading. Language and reading require the same types of sound analysis. The better babies are at distinguishing the building blocks of speech at six months, the better they will be at more complex language skills at two and three years old, and the easier it will be for them at four and five years old to grasp the idea of how sounds link to letters.

The Difference Between Education and Learning

Education according to the gurus, prepares a child to live in society and the world, as we know it today. It inculcates values and introduces skills the child can hone as he or she grows up to earn a living. While education is a system, learning is a thirst quencher - it satisfies a curiosity and gives wing to imagination. As a parent or caregiver, you need to encourage this thirst for knowledge and nurture the imagination. Education does not begin or end with school and university. One can be educated constantly every moment of life. And, as you know experiences are life's greatest teachers. Learning has many aspects. The basic aspect is to provide a vitally conducive environment and the appropriate tools to learn.

Advantages and Disadvantages of Bilingual Children

I speak Swedish and my husband's native language is English. When we had our two children, we had no doubt that we wanted to raise them with equal access to both languages. Now, years later, when I've made promoting multilingual child-raising not just my avocation, but my vocation as well, people ask me for the straight story, warts and all. "What is the difference, raising bilingual children?" "What do you wish you knew before you got started?" It's clear to most of us that speaking multiple languages is a good thing, and learning multiple languages in the early years is a nearly effortless means to fluency. Your multilingual child will have a head start in schools during a time when more and more of them are requiring a foreign language.

Drug Testing and Teens

Drug use amongst young people is an increasing trend, yet the public perception of the suitability / effectiveness of random drugs testing at school is relatively uncertain. Such testing takes place quite rarely in the UK, in spite of it being a more common practice in the USA. The average starting age for heroin use in many cities in the UK is just 15, and a survey of over 20, 000 UK school children showed that 9% of 13 year olds and over a quarter (27%) of 15 year olds had used an illegal drug at some point in their lives. So there is clearly a need for more assertive intervention at an early age. Parents face the growing concern that their teenager may already be taking drugs, or that they are in an environment where they are exposed to those who will offer them drugs, especially Cannabis / Marijuana.

Tips on Teaching Your Child to Read

Stories influence children's learning for life. Some research suggests that the more stories children hear before entering school, the more likely they will be successful academically. Listening to books benefits their vocabulary and comprehension. Spending just 15 minutes a day on this worthwhile activity can reap tremendous benefits! MAKE READING FUN Use a variety of expressions, tones, and voices to make a book even more fun. Allow a child to listen at her own pace. If a baby fusses or a toddler wanders away, don't worry. Set the book aside and try again later. A baby may only listen for a minute or two at a time. Toddlers may want to wander around while you read, or listen to a few pages, move on to something else, and then return for a few more pages.

Why Teenagers Take Risks

So, rather than be judgmental of his son he was able to say, "Learn from me son. Don't develop a bad habit that may be hard to stop." Teenagers are learning from us all the time, learning bad habits and learning good habits. You know teenagers generally look to their parents for advice, modeling and how to assess risks. So, communication's got to be open and without ordering or judgment. So that teens are going to listen and learn how to assess risks. Because let's face it, there are risks in everything we do whether it's just getting into a car. When I get into my car to drive to work that's a risk. It's a risk that I assess just the same as getting into a car with a group of teenagers.

Teen Safety On The Roads

In a recent survey, 3 out of 4 teens said parents are the biggest influence over how they drive. Although the dreaded â safe drivingâ conversation may seem difficult to approach, taking an active role in your teens driving could save lives. Here are some questions to consider while having this discussion with your teen: -Does your teen truly understand what â safe drivingâ means? The Allstate -Foundationâ s research shows that teens differentiate between â goodâ drivers and â safeâ drivers. For example, teens consider â goodâ drivers to be those who can handle a car at high speeds while a â safeâ driver follows all the rules. -In general, does your teenager show good judgment?
